How to cut a video clip, remove audio or save a frame

Updated · 6 min read

Most of the time you need only part of a video: ten seconds from the middle, the picture without the noise, or a single frame for a thumbnail. You do not need an editor for any of that. This guide covers the three most common jobs and how to do each in your browser without uploading your footage.

Try the video extractor nowFree, runs in your browser, nothing uploaded.

Extract what you need in four steps

The free video extractor has three modes and runs on your device.

  • Drop your video on the extractor to open the preview.
  • Choose Video without audio, Clip or Still frame.
  • Set the start and end time for a clip, or pause the preview on the frame you want.
  • Press the action button and download the result.

Remove the audio from a video

Silent video is useful for background loops on a website, for adding your own music, or for sharing a screen recording that picked up room noise. The tool copies the picture exactly as it is and drops the soundtrack, so the video quality does not change and it finishes quickly.

Cut a clip: fast or precise

Fast mode cuts without re-encoding, so it is quick and lossless. Video is stored in groups of frames, so a fast cut can begin a little before the time you picked. Precise cut re-encodes the clip, which takes longer but starts on the exact frame.

A good rule is to use fast mode for rough trims and precise mode for the final cut. If you also need a smaller file, pass the result through the video converter.

Save a still frame for thumbnails

Pause the preview on the exact moment you want and save it as PNG for full quality or JPG for a smaller image. Choose a frame with a clear face, good light and nothing blurred. Use the highest resolution source you have, because a frame can never be sharper than the video it came from.

Take the sound or the words instead

To keep only the sound, use the audio extractor. To get the spoken words as text and subtitles, use the video transcript tool. Both work on the same file without uploading it.

Fast cut or precise cut?

A fast cut copies the video without re-encoding, so it is almost instant and lossless, but the start can land on the nearest keyframe. A precise cut re-encodes the clip so it begins on the exact frame, at the cost of time and a small quality setting. For a thumbnail, use a still frame at the highest resolution you have.
