FAQ

Common questions

How is the frame rate measured?

The page counts the video frames your browser actually receives each second, so it shows real delivered FPS rather than the number the camera advertises.

Why does my camera run below 30 FPS in dim light?

Many webcams lengthen exposure in low light, which lowers the frame rate. Adding light usually restores 30 FPS.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. Frames are analysed on your device and nothing is transmitted. Snapshots are saved only if you download them.

The preview is black. What should I do?

Check the privacy shutter, close other apps using the camera, and make sure the right camera is selected. Then press Start camera again.

Is there a way to test a webcam?

Yes. Open this page, press Start camera and allow access. The preview shows your live video, along with its resolution, real measured frame rate and a lighting check. No software needs to be installed, and it works on Windows, Mac, Chromebook, Android and iPhone.

How to test mic and camera?

Press Start camera and allow both camera and microphone access when the browser asks. The video preview shows your webcam, and the level meter moves when you speak, so you can confirm both work in one go. If the video works but the meter is flat, check your mic with the dedicated mic test.

Is a webcam test safe?

This webcam test is safe because everything runs in your browser. Video frames are analysed on your device and are not uploaded, recorded or stored on a server. The camera only turns on after you press Start camera and allow access, and you can stop it at any time or close the tab to switch it off.

How to do a webcam test?

Press Start camera, choose Allow in the browser prompt, and check that the picture is sharp, smooth and well lit. Choose a resolution, read the FPS figure, and follow the lighting verdict. If the preview is black, check the privacy shutter, close other apps using the camera and select the correct camera.

Can I test my webcam and mic together?

Yes. Leave Also test my microphone ticked and press Start camera. The video preview and the microphone level meter run at the same time.

Why does my camera mic test show no audio?

Your browser may have blocked microphone access, or the system is using a different input. Allow the microphone from the address bar, then test the input on the mic test page.

Guide

Webcam Test: what it checks and how to read it

Webcam and mic test in one step

Most calls need both a camera and sound, so this webcam mic test checks them together. Keep Also test my microphone ticked, press Start camera and talk. The video shows resolution, measured frame rate, brightness and colour balance while the microphone meter shows your level in decibels. It works as a quick camera and mic test before Zoom, Teams, Google Meet or an online interview.

What the camera numbers mean

Resolution tells you how many pixels the camera delivers, for example 1280 by 720. Measured FPS counts the frames your browser really receives each second, which is more honest than the figure printed on the box. Brightness and contrast come from sampling the live image, so a camera mic test also tells you whether you need more light.

Camera mic test troubleshooting

A black preview usually means a closed privacy shutter, another app using the camera, or the wrong camera selected. If the video works but the microphone meter stays flat, speak closer to the device and check the system input volume. Need only the sound? Use the dedicated online mic test for a full waveform.
