FAQ

Common questions

Why does a key not light up?

It may be dead, blocked by dirt, or reserved by the operating system. Fn and some media keys are handled by firmware and never reach the browser.

What is key rollover?

It is how many keys can be pressed at once and still register. Cheap keyboards often cap at 4–6 keys, while gaming keyboards offer N-key rollover.

Does it work with non-US layouts?

Yes. Keys are matched by physical position, so layouts such as AZERTY or QWERTZ light the same physical keys. The panel also shows the character each key produces.

Can I test a laptop or Mac keyboard?

Yes. On macOS the Command key is shown as Meta. Fn is not visible to browsers on any platform.

How do I test a Chromebook keyboard?

Open this page, press Start test and press every key. The Search key shows as Meta. Hold Search with a top-row key to send F1 to F12.

How is keyboard test speed measured?

The page counts key presses over the last 10 seconds and divides by five characters per word to estimate words per minute. It also reports your peak keys per second.

Guide

Keyboard Test: what it checks and how to read it

Online keyboard test for every key

This online keyboard test shows a full-size layout with function keys, a navigation cluster and a number pad. Press Start test, then press every key. Held keys turn black, tested keys turn blue, and the counter shows how many of the 104 keys have registered. A key that never turns blue is dead, stuck, or intercepted by the operating system.

Chromebook keyboard test

A Chromebook keyboard test works the same way, with a few differences. The Search key appears as Meta, there is no Caps Lock key by default, and the top row sends action keys such as back and refresh instead of F1 to F12. Hold the Search key while pressing a top-row key to send the function key, then check that it lights up here.

Keyboard test speed

The keyboard test speed panel measures your typing speed in words per minute over the last ten seconds, and shows the fastest burst of key presses in one second. Use it to check that fast typing does not drop keys. For a clean number, type normal text rather than mashing a single key.

Rollover and ghosting

Hold several keys together and the Max keys at once counter shows how many your keyboard registers at the same time. Budget keyboards often stop at four to six keys. Gaming keyboards advertise N-key rollover. If you also game, run the controller test and the mouse test to check the rest of your setup.
