Discord mic not working: test it and fix it
When friends cannot hear you on Discord, first find out whether the microphone itself works. Press the check below and speak. If the level moves, your hardware and system are fine and the issue sits in Discord settings. If nothing moves, fix the device first using the steps here.
Quick fix checklist
- 1Press Check microphone. If the level does not move, fix the device before touching Discord.
- 2In Discord open User Settings > Voice & Video and choose your microphone under Input Device.
- 3Turn on Automatically determine input sensitivity, or lower the sensitivity slider so your voice passes.
- 4Check that you are not server-muted and that Push to Talk has a key set if you use it.
- 5Press Reset Voice Settings, and allow Discord to use the microphone in your system privacy settings.
The most common Discord causes
The wrong input device is the top cause, especially after plugging in a headset. The second is the input sensitivity gate, which silences you when it is set too high. Discord also depends on the operating system privacy switch for the microphone, which can be off after an update.
In the browser version Discord asks for microphone access like any website. If you pressed Block, reset it from the lock icon in the address bar.
Still silent?
Try another USB port, test the same microphone with the microphone test in a second browser, and update your audio driver. If the level moves here in one browser but not another, clear that browser permission for the site.
