Fix guide · Microphone test
Test your MacBook microphone online
MacBooks have a built-in array of microphones that usually works well. When it does not, the cause is a macOS privacy setting, the wrong input selected, or a closed lid. Press the check below and speak. A moving level means the hardware is fine.
Quick fix checklist
- 1Press Check microphone and speak in a normal voice. The level bar should move.
- 2Open System Settings > Sound > Input and select the built-in microphone, then raise the input volume.
- 3Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and switch on your browser and meeting apps.
- 4Disconnect Bluetooth headphones and external displays with speakers, which can take over the input.
- 5Open the lid fully; in clamshell mode the MacBook uses an external microphone instead.
Common MacBook microphone problems
Connecting AirPods or another Bluetooth headset makes macOS switch the input to that headset, which can sound thin and quiet. Choose the built-in microphone in Sound > Input if you want the laptop mic. A closed lid or a connected external monitor can move the input too.
A quiet microphone is often a dust-covered pinhole or a case blocking it. Keep the small holes next to the camera clear. Resetting the audio service with a restart clears many rare faults.
Browser permission on Mac
Safari has its own website permission under Safari > Settings > Websites > Microphone. Chrome and Firefox use the lock icon in the address bar. See the Safari microphone fix for the exact steps.
FAQ
Common questions
How do I test the microphone on my MacBook?
Press Check microphone on this page, allow access and speak. A moving level bar shows that the built-in microphone works.
Why is my MacBook microphone not working?
The browser or app has no microphone permission, the wrong input is selected, or Bluetooth headphones took over. Check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
Which microphone does a MacBook use?
The built-in microphone array unless you connect headphones or an external device, which macOS may select automatically.
Can I hear myself while testing?
Yes, the full microphone test has a Hear myself option. Use headphones to avoid a loud squeal.
