Safari microphone not working: how to fix it
Safari protects your microphone with its own website permission on top of the system privacy setting. That is why a mic can work in Chrome but stay silent in Safari. Press the check below. If Safari asks for permission, choose Allow. If it does not, the steps below unblock it.
Quick fix checklist
- 1Press Check microphone and choose Allow when Safari asks.
- 2On Mac open Safari > Settings > Websites > Microphone and set this site to Allow or Ask.
- 3On iPhone open Settings > Safari > Microphone (or Settings > Apps > Safari) and choose Ask or Allow.
- 4On Mac check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and switch on Safari.
- 5Reload the page, and avoid Private Browsing windows that forget the permission.
Why Safari keeps asking
Safari asks for the microphone each time a site loads unless you set the website to Allow. It also forgets the choice in Private Browsing and after you clear website data. This is normal behaviour, not a fault, and it protects your privacy.
When Allow is not enough
If the level stays flat after allowing the site, choose the correct input in System Settings > Sound > Input, disconnect Bluetooth headphones that took over the input and restart Safari. On iPhone, remove the case from the bottom microphone and see the iPhone microphone tester.
FAQ
Common questions
How do I allow the microphone in Safari?
Open Safari > Settings > Websites > Microphone on a Mac and set the site to Allow. On iPhone, use Settings > Safari > Microphone.
Why does Safari keep asking for the microphone?
Safari asks every visit unless the site is set to Allow, and it forgets the answer in Private Browsing.
