How to test and fix your Android microphone
On Android the microphone is controlled by a system privacy toggle and by permission for each app. Open this page in Chrome, press the check and speak. If the level moves, the hardware works and the fault is in an app, a case or a Bluetooth link.
Quick fix checklist
- 1Open this page in Chrome, press Check microphone and tap Allow when asked.
- 2If no prompt appears, open Settings > Apps > Chrome > Permissions > Microphone and choose Allow only while using the app.
- 3Open Settings > Privacy > Permission manager > Microphone to see which apps are allowed, and enable the one you need.
- 4On Android 12 and later check the Quick Settings Mic access tile and make sure it is on.
- 5Remove the case, and clean the small microphone hole at the bottom edge with a soft dry brush.
- 6Turn off Bluetooth earbuds, which may take over as the input, then restart the phone and test again.
Android permission layers
Android lets you switch the microphone off for the whole phone, then allow or deny each app. Chrome also keeps a separate permission for each website. If the website permission is blocked, tap the lock icon next to the address, open Permissions and set Microphone to Allow.
Different microphones for calls and video
Phones have several microphones. The bottom one serves calls and the rear one serves video. If only video lacks sound, a case or dirt may block the rear microphone. Record a short clip with the voice recorder and compare. See the iPhone microphone tester for similar hardware tips.
