Fix guide · Webcam test
Test your webcam on Chrome
Chrome asks once for camera permission and then remembers your answer. If the picture is black or Chrome says the camera is blocked, you can change it in a few clicks. Press the check below to see whether Chrome can use your camera right now.
Quick fix checklist
- 1Press Check camera and click Allow when Chrome asks.
- 2If it says blocked, click the camera or lock icon in the address bar and set Camera to Allow.
- 3Open chrome://settings/content/camera, choose the right camera and remove this site from Blocked.
- 4Close other tabs and apps using the camera, then reload the page.
- 5Update Chrome, and try a new Incognito window to rule out extensions.
Choose the right camera in Chrome
If you have a built-in camera and a USB webcam, Chrome may start with the wrong one. Use the device list in the check to pick the other camera. Chrome remembers the default under Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Camera.
Extensions that add filters or virtual cameras can also replace the picture. Disable them or test in Incognito, where most extensions are off.
Black picture in Chrome only
If other browsers show the camera but Chrome does not, turn off hardware acceleration in Chrome settings, restart Chrome and test again. A stale permission, a graphics driver issue or a second Chrome profile holding the camera are the usual causes. See NotAllowedError for permission steps.
