Firefox microphone not working: test and fix
Firefox asks for microphone access in a small prompt and lets you choose the device there. If you dismissed the prompt, chose the wrong microphone or blocked the site, the level stays flat. Press the check below to see what Firefox hears, then use the steps to fix it.
Quick fix checklist
- 1Press Check microphone, pick your microphone in the Firefox prompt and click Allow.
- 2If you see no prompt, click the permissions icon left of the address bar and clear the blocked microphone.
- 3Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Permissions > Microphone > Settings and remove blocked sites.
- 4Check the system input: Windows Sound settings, macOS Sound > Input, or your Linux sound settings.
- 5Restart Firefox and make sure no other app holds the microphone.
Pick the right device in the prompt
Unlike other browsers, Firefox shows a drop-down list inside the prompt. If you let it use the wrong device and tick Remember this decision, it keeps using it. Remove the saved permission and choose again.
Linux and privacy settings
On Linux, Firefox needs a working PulseAudio or PipeWire input. Check the input device in your sound settings. A privacy setting such as resist fingerprinting can hide device names, which makes the list look empty. Try a fresh Firefox profile to rule out add-ons.
FAQ
Common questions
How do I allow the microphone in Firefox?

Why does Firefox not show the microphone prompt?
The site is blocked, or you chose Not now with remember turned on. Clear it in the permissions icon or in Settings > Privacy & Security.
