Check your camera for Microsoft Teams

A black or missing camera in Teams usually has a simple cause. Use the live check below to confirm that your camera and browser permission work. If the picture appears here but not in Teams, the fix is in the Teams device settings or in another app that is holding the camera.

Press the button, allow access and we will check your device.

100% secure. Processing happens entirely in your browser. Your audio, video and microphone feeds are never uploaded to a server or recorded.

Quick fix checklist

  1. 1Press Check camera and confirm you can see yourself.
  2. 2In Teams open Settings > Devices and pick the same camera under Camera.
  3. 3Close other apps that may hold the camera, such as Zoom, Skype or a second Teams window.
  4. 4Allow Teams to use the camera in Windows Settings > Privacy & security > Camera, or in Mac System Settings.
  5. 5Restart Teams, or use Teams in the browser and allow camera access when asked.

Why Teams shows a black screen

Teams can only open a camera that no other program is using. A leftover call window, a camera app or a virtual camera blocks it. A laptop privacy shutter or a function key that switches off the camera gives the same black picture.

On work computers an administrator can disable the camera for apps. If the device never appears in the Teams list but works in this check, ask IT about the policy.

Look good on camera

Face a window or a lamp rather than sitting with the light behind you, raise the camera to eye level and keep the lens clean. The webcam test shows the resolution and frame rate so you know what your camera delivers.

FAQ

Common questions

Why is my camera not working in Teams?

Another app is using it, Teams has no permission, or the wrong camera is selected. Close other apps, check privacy settings and choose the camera in Teams devices.

Can I test my camera without a Teams meeting?

Yes. Use this check, or open Teams Settings > Devices to see a preview.

Does this check send my video to Microsoft?

No. The picture stays in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or recorded.

Why does Teams in the browser not ask for the camera?

The permission was blocked earlier. Click the lock icon in the address bar and allow the camera for the Teams site.
