How to record your voice online and save it as MP3

You do not need an app or an account to record a lecture, an interview or a quick voice note. A browser can capture your microphone and encode MP3 on your own device. This guide explains how to record, which quality to choose and how to get a clean result.

Choose the right quality
Speech does not need the same bitrate as music. A two-hour recording is about 58 MB at 64 kbps mono, 86 MB at 96 kbps and 115 MB at 128 kbps. Choose 64 kbps for lectures and meetings where small files matter, and 128 kbps for interviews or podcasts where you want the best clarity.
Test your microphone first
Recordings cannot be fixed afterwards if the level was wrong, so check the signal beforehand. Run the mic test and aim for peaks between about -18 dB and -6 dB. Read the microphone guide if the level is too low or distorted.
Get cleaner audio
Small changes in the room matter more than any setting.
- Record in a quiet room and close windows. Soft furniture and curtains reduce echo.
- Keep the microphone about a hand’s width from your mouth, slightly to the side to avoid breath noise.
- Use a headset or an external microphone if your laptop is noisy, and put the laptop on a stable surface.
- Switch off notifications and anything that buzzes.
- Speak naturally, and do a few seconds of test recording before you start.
Where your recordings are stored
Audio is captured, encoded and saved in your browser storage. Nothing is uploaded, which keeps interviews and notes private. The flip side is that clearing site data deletes your recordings, so download anything important. Keep the tab in the foreground during long sessions, since locking a phone can pause the browser.
Recording what your computer plays
A microphone recorder captures sound from the microphone. It cannot record system audio, such as music playing on the computer, without a loopback input like Stereo Mix, which some systems provide. To record a call, put the call on speaker and place the microphone near it, or use the recording tool built into the app.
